Tales of the Town at deYoung Museum
Tales of the Town is a multimedia project—featuring a podcast, film, and art exhibit—that documents over 100 years of Black history, culture, and resistance in Oakland, California. Created by Abbas Muntaqim and Delency Parham, it highlights the city's evolution, gentrification, and community resilience.
I helped co-curate the exhibit portion of the project with Abbas, Delency, and artist, Dariane Beamon and headed install for de Young. Each episode of the podcast (12 total) had various texts, photography, paintings, or found objects to go along. We had under 5 hours to install over 60 pieces. On the day of install, we discovered one of the moveable walls provided was different from what we had planned for, so we had to redesign on the spot. I created custom templates to ensure cohesive spacing and heights across all display walls.
For episode 11 of the podcast, Covid-19 in Oakland, I contributed an infographic piece which puts visuals to the disproportionate effect Covid-19 had on Oakland's BIPOC community.
